BRUNEI is on its way to the Asean PGA Tour.
The good news came yesterday during the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Professional Golfers' Association of Brunei Darussalam (Brunei PGA) and the Asean PGA at the VIP conference room of the Royal Brunei Recreation Club (RBRC) in Berakas.
Signing on behalf of the Brunei PGA were the president, Dato Paduka Hj Hamzah Hj Salleh, the Chairman-cum-Chief Executive Officer of the Management Committee, Hj Abdul Majid Ahmad and the Tour Official, Elyas Azri.
Honourable Chairman of the Asean PGA, AC Wong, its Executive Director, Ramlan Haron, and Marketing Manager of World Sports Group, Elliot Murdoch, signed on behalf of the Asean PGA.
Present as the guest of honour to witness the signing was Dato Paduka Hj Jemat Hj Ampal, the permanent secretary of the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports.
The Brunei PGA and its Asean counterpart are looking at introducing the Brunei event soon possibly this year.
The Brunei PGA, officially registered with the Registrar of Societies of the Royal Brunei Police Force on Dec 4 last year, recently established a working relationship with the Asean PGA to co-sanction new professional tournaments in Brunei.
Besides putting Brunei on the Asean PGA Tour, it hopes that this working relationship will help produce more professional golfers in Brunei. The country has three professional golfers, Pg S Hassanal Al-Haj PPN Pg Hj Omar, Faiz Damit and Ak Wira Pg Salleh.
This should also provide more opportunities for local players to play in regional tournaments.
"The main reason for signing the MoU is to promote professional golf (in the country). The more golfers we get the better. We're hoping to attract professionals from other countries to compete here as well. Hopefully, this will motivate our golfers to turn pro," said Dato Paduka Hj Hamzah, in an interview with The Brunei Times, yesterday.
Brunei's professional golfing body is also hoping to run smaller tournaments to be hosted by the various golf clubs in the Sultanate.
The Asean PGA Tour will embark on its fifth season in May boasting a record prize money of US$685,000, which is over US$100,000 more than last year, and nine tournaments.
The Singha Pattaya Open will be the curtain raiser and will be played at the Burapha Golf Club in May in Thailand.
The Singha Esan Open and the ICTSI MT Malarayat Championships also in Thailand will be on the schedule as well.
The Asean PGA Tour will also welcome on board six new competitions with four of them to be held in Indonesia. The other two are to take place in Malaysia.
The Bali Heritage, Lombok Heritage, The Heritage and Ancora Classic will be the Indonesian additions while the Malaysian events are yet to be finalised.
Among the big names playing on the Asean PGA Tour are Singapore's Mardan Mamat, who was voted Most Inspiring Performance of the Year last season, and last season's Player of the Year Nicolas Fung of Malaysia.

MERCEDES-BENZ TOUR RISING STARS TO PLAY BARCLAYS SINGAPORE OPEN
April 20: The Mercedes-Benz Tour will offer its members a direct pathway into the Barclays Singapore Open this year after announcing it has secured seven spots in one of the world’s most lucrative national Opens.
The top six players from this year’s final Mercedes-Benz Tour Order of Merit will qualify along with the number one ranked player from last year. Thailand’s Namchok Tantipokhakul, who claimed the 2009 Merit list following two victories, is therefore the first player to benefit from this exciting new development. Last season the Barclays Singapore Open boasted prize money of US$5million and so a place in the field has the potential for a player to earn a bumper pay cheque. The tournament also offers the opportunity to play alongside the best players in the world with former winners being Australian Adam Scott (2005 and 2006), Angel Cabrera from Argentina (2007), and England’s Ian Poulter (2009).
Said Namchok, “I am in shock! Last year was a great season for me on the Mercedes-Benz Tour but this is an unexpected surprise. I have played in the qualifying rounds for the Barclays Singapore Open before and just missed making it through. Now I don’t have to worry about trying to qualify. I can’t wait for the week to come.” The stocky younger golfer claimed the B-ing Championship on home soil and the season-ending Mercedes-Benz Masters Vietnam in 2009 and earned US$27,540 from eight events.
“We have been working hard on opening more doors for our members and we are therefore overjoyed to be able to afford them the chance to compete in what is the richest national Open in Asia,” said AC Wong, Executive Chairman, Mercedes-Benz Tour.
Filipino Artemio Murakami gave himself a great chance of becoming one of the six to make it through to Singapore this season by winning the Mercedes-Benz Masters Philippines last week.
The tournament was the opening event of the season.
Wolfgang Huppenbauer, President & CEO of Daimler South-East Asia Pte. Ltd: “We are happy to hear of this latest development and this is exactly in line with what the Mercedes-Benz Tour hopes to accomplish; offering promising golfers opportunities to compete with the best.”
“We firmly believe in encouraging professional golf at all levels in our region and were delighted to help in paving the way for seven spots to be made available for players from the Mercedes-Benz Tour,” said Chris Jordan, Senior Vice President, Golf, World Sport Group.
The final event on the Mercedes-Benz Tour this year where the six qualifiers will be determined is the Mercedes-Benz Masters Indonesia at Emeralda Golf and Country Club – just outside Jakarta.
This event will be played from October 20 to 23 and as the Tour Championship it is restricted to the top-60 players from the Money List.
Competitors now head for the Singha Pattaya Open at Burapha Golf Club from April 29 to May 2. The Mercedes-Benz Tour boasts 10 tournaments offering a total purse of US$580,000.

3rd Annual Conference |
|
The official governing body of the Mercedes-Benz Tour is the ASEAN PGA and their officials have once again lauded the support of Mercedes-Benz.

A.C. Wong, Executive Chairman, ASEAN PGA said: “We are in very good shape this year thanks to our friends in the ASEAN member countries and the sponsorship of Mercedes-Benz. We launched the ASEAN PGA Tour in 2007 with five tournaments and that has now doubled.”

The ASEAN PGA held its third annual conference this week in Singapore with representatives from countries who will be staging events on this year’s Tour as well as delegates from Brunei, Cambodia, and Laos.
“We now have a great organizational structure in place and now that we have announced the schedule, we are all in buoyant mood and aware that the potential for further expansion is huge,” added Wong.
